Rambling
Rambling map No. 24 - Wittlicher Land
For the first time in the history of the Eifelverein a rambling map has been created which, in addition to the rambling paths, also lists all the cycle trails signposted. In the Moselle-Eifel holiday region, almost all asphalted paths through fields are open for use by cyclists. This is one of the reasons that this edition of the map has been implemented as a pilot project which can possibly in future also be adopted for other new editions of rambling maps.As a result, comprehensive cycling tour possibilities are opened up for holiday guests. Just a short trip along the path across the fields to the baker in the neighbouring village, on a balmy summer evening back to the holiday accommodation after a Lucullan meal in the “Strausswirtschaft”, establish contacts between guests and the local residents every Friday evening within the framework of a guided cycling tour and much else ... A new regional rambling path leads along the 50th latitude from the west of the Wittlich-Land regional district through the district town of Wittlich to the eastern border of the district. On this tour the rambler crosses the 50th latitude more than 30 times. A continuation of the route from the Luxembourg border to the State Capital Mainz is in preparation. In the map it is symbolised by the figure 50.
For the first time, too, the Matthias pilgrim path from the village of Niederöfflingen through the place of pilgrimage, Klausen on to Hetzerath has been marked in the path. From there the route leads on to the tomb of St. Matthew (Matthias) in St Matthew's basilica in Trier. The pilgrims' badge with the inscription “Our life” and the apostle's insignia of an axe and staff were chosen as the symbol in the map.
