Twin town Boxtel

Boxtel, our Dutch twin town with a population of 29,000 inhabitants with the function of an intermediate centre, located in the triangle of the towns of s’Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven and Tilburg in the province of North Brabant, is located in a green lowland plain of some 6500 ha in the midst of agricultural fields.
First mentioned in a deed of the abbey of Echternach around 1100, Boxtel's history dates from 1010 when the Count of Leuven made himself independent of the Emperor, called himself Duke of Brabant and constructed a residence for himself where St. Peter's Church (Petruskerk) stands today. Later Stapelen Castle served as the residence of the lords of Boxtel. Since January 1996, the unitary municipality of Boxtel consists of Boxtel, Liempde and Lennisheuvel.
Boxtel is renowned for its agricultural products and its “klompenmakers”, the makers of wooden clogs for home and abroad. With favourable transport connections, Boxtel disposes of good commercial and service relationships which have been systematically developed since 1860: s'Hertogenbosch – Amsterdam, Tilburg – Rotterdam, Eindhoven- Keulen and Veghel –Goch. In the course of time, larger companies from the timber industry, cigar industry, metal working and meat processing sectors settled in this region. Other industrial businesses followed this pioneering activity, also settling there so that important industrial areas developed. However, Boxtel is also known for its flowers and garden plants.

Boxtel offers a variety of facilities for sports, games and leisure, in particular in the “Wandelpark Molenwijk” and in the recreational area “De Langspier”. Reciprocal visits by clubs from the twinned towns bear witness to great activities. A walk from the Petruskerk to Stapelen Castle but also strolling around the old part of Boxtel and enjoying a good cup of coffee is well worth while! The visitor can learn about the way of life in Brabant in folklore museums, e.g. “De Kleuskes”, where the family life of a wooden clog carver is presented, or in the historical museum “Piet Dorenbosch”, accommodated in Boxtel's most famous monument “ 't Hofje”. Brabant's landscape with extensive forests, fragrant expanses of heath and wide sand dunes is not only beautiful and full of variety, but also suitable for long hikes and cycle tours.
